And that's it for Miles O'Brien.

CNN is shuttering science, space, environment and technology unit.

From the article:

And in February 2003, O'Brien led coverage of the shuttle Columbia tragedy.

That's not a positive thing.

You'd think that having your ace space correspondent on hand at the anchor desk leading things would be a win-win situation.

But watching him melt down in the hot seat on air like a babbling tornado of confusion, it was amusing to hear him try to walk to Walter Cronkite and get occasional responses of "Huh?" and "I don't understand." from the old veteran.

When caught in the storm of not enough information and a thousand voices in his IFB, the man cratered.

And yet, he's hung on for more than five years after that.

Kinda sad, thinking CNN couldn't get anybody better in all that time.

Even sadder, with CNN using the general assignment stooges with no clue about science to cover science stories from the "Planet In Peril" hype-angle, utterly incapable of critical analysis of the material and press releases they are asked to regurgitate from the rolodexes of approved sources.

Back to fixing the Transporters, I guess.
