Seeing red

Okay, so over the past year and a half, I've been trapped Downtown every day for various lengths of time twice a day, waiting for one bus or another.

During this time, creatures of various stages of evolution have come up to me, begging for various commodities, services, or financial assistance.

The ones that ask for bus fare, well, they're in for a special treat.

You see, work has given me a blue commuter pass that's got a month of credit on it. But I still have time on my monthly red pass.

While strolling downtown these past three days, I've been asked for money for bus fare twice. And I've pulled out my red card and offered it.

And rejected twice.

Fucking homeless.

Dude, they don't want bus fare, they want a rock.

To wind a piece of string around?

plum:

A little over ten years ago there was a program in Cambridge MA (surprise!) where you could get coupons to give to the "homeless" that could be used to buy stuff in local shops (food, toiletries, etc.). The bums actually organized a protest saying that the coupons were an insult and an infringement on their chosen lifestyle.

Beggars can't be choosers, but they can be lobbyists.

Most of them would be in mental institutions if the budgets hadn't been gutted in the 80s. Most of them are nuts. Some are just substance abusers, but those wind up in the nuthouse, too.
