Unfortunately, my mother and I did know him. We're from the same community and he's my age.
Fortunately, he didn't ask me to join him.

I knew him slightly. He was kind and a generous spirit, and he deserves to rest in peace. None of us were there so the circumstances of his death are not so cut and dry as you surmise.
Certainly his dealth warrants more than a joke. Say a prayer instead.
